Chardin and the Still Life

Friday 8 September, 2023 @ 5:45 pm - 7:00 pm AEST

$25

Highly sought after by Louis XV of France and the Empress Catherine of Russia, Jean Simeon Chardin’s paintings brought life and vitality to the canvas. The Enlightenment philosopher Denis Diderot remarked that Chardin’s ability to evoke the appearance and texture of objects was akin to magic.

This lecture will address his life and influences and follows the course of his career from obscure beginnings to his emergence as one of Europe’s greatest painters of his day.

September guest lecturer is Kathy McLauchlan, a graduate of Oxford University and the Courtauld Institute with a PhD in French 19th century painters in Rome. She is currently a course director at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and a freelance lecturer.

Members free, guests $25 at the door.

Wine and nibbles follow the 1 hour lecture.
