Dog friendly experiences in the tamworth region
Have you ever felt like a weekend away but just couldn’t because it’s too hard to organise with your doggos?
Well, we have done the work for you and put together the top dog friendly accommodation and experiences in the Tamworth region which both you and furry friends will love. And you don’t need to compromise, because there are some great places to choose from!
Dog friendly Tamworth experiences
The Tamworth region is home to some great parks and natural environments which your pet will absolutely love, and you will too! Remember to take doggy bags with you on any of your adventures.
Powerhouse Dog Park
A specially-designed and closed-in dog park where your dog can run crazy with other dogs. There are two fenced-off sections, one with an obstacle course where your pooch can show off their skills or do a bit of training. The other side is open for play and has undercover seating available for the doggo’s humans to sit. For a list of off-leash dog areas visit the Tamworth Regional Council website.
Peel River levee bank walk
A picturesque walk along the Peel River on a sealed pathway. It runs from the Scott Road bridge to the Jewry Street bridge which is about 2.5 kilometres. There is a dog-friendly café on the walk too – make sure you swing by Hopscotch Restaurant and Bar along the for a refreshment and break.
Tamworth Walking Tracks
The Kamilaroi Walking Track is an unsealed dirt track which traverses the hills behind the Oxley Scenic Lookout, and is the starting point for the tracks. A popular walk is up Flagstaff Mountain – a 5 kilometre round trip requiring appropriate footwear and a moderate fitness/ability level. Make sure to keep your dog on a lead.
Other popular walks include the Tamworth Mountain Bike Park which has over 10 kilometres of tracks, some shared tracks with bikes and some tracks exclusively for walkers. Keep an eye on the signage for shared paths and be sure to check out the Aboriginal Cultural signs along the way for some really interesting local knowledge on the customs and practices of the traditional owners. Like the Kamilaroi Walking Tracks, a decent level of fitness/ability is required and be sure to keep your dog on a lead.
The Great Nundle Dog Race
The Great Nundle Dog Race is not only the best thing you can do with your furry friend in the Tamworth region, it is probably one of the best dog day outs anywhere!
The day consists of races for mongrels and house dogs, high jump, steeple chase, dress ups, singing…there’s something for everyone and every dog.
The event is held annually in either April or May in Nundle and attracts hundreds of dogs and their owners for a fun day out. If you are a dog lover but don’t have one of your own you are still very welcome to attend. Check out our What’s On calendar to see when the next one is.

Dog friendly accommodation
The majority of caravan parks in the Tamworth region are dog friendly but do not allow pets to stay in their cabins. Check with each provider directly; most allow dogs on powered and non-powered camp sites, and doggos must be kept on a lead.
McNevins Tamworth Motel has two pet-friendly rooms for you and your pooch to stay in. They also have a fully enclosed grass area to allow dogs to come off the lead.
Best Western Sanctuary Inn has two pet-friendly rooms and a loft room occasional includes fee. There is a grass area that is secure for doggos to come off the lead, and they offer a breakfast outside option so that you can keep your pet close.
Roydons Motor Inn allows pets in the standard Queen, Twin, or Family rooms with an added fee for cleaning. Dogs must be on a lead in outdoor areas.
