The 2340 Big Band presents a celebration of the songs of soul music. With its origins in African-American gospel music, the soul genre has evolved to become one of the most influential factors in pop music over the past 60 years.
Expect to hear some hits from the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, along with songs made popular by Stevie Wonder, Roachford and more recently, Alicia Keys.
Listen out for the searing vocal intensity, call-and-response lyrics and extravagant use of melisma, along with a strong horn line and a driving rhythm section which characterise soul music.
With a 17-piece band and vocals led by Kate Armstrong, Brad Gill, Sally-Anne Whitten, Rae Moody and a host of other talented local artists, come along and be entertained by an evening of music that is sure to appeal to your inner soul.
