The National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity is a premier event on the equine calendar, attracting over 15,000 spectators and 700 competitors from Australia, the USA, New Zealand, and New Caledonia. They compete for a share of AUD 900,000 in money and prizes at the Australian Equine Livestock Event Centre (AELEC) in Tamworth, NSW.
Spanning fifteen days, the competition culminates in the Open Futurity Final, showcasing the top horses and riders in the sport of cutting. As the largest and richest performance horse event in the southern hemisphere, it features an action-packed cutting program, an extensive country/western trade display, and a Select Cutting Horse sale.
Starting from humble beginnings at the Moonbi Showgrounds with a prize purse of $10,000 in 1974, the first official cutting Futurity ran over three days with 25 competitors. Now, 51 years later, this prestigious event is hosted in Tamworth, NSW, the Country Music Capital, and is a major drawcard for the region, contributing an estimated $4.5 million to the local economy each year.
