Poised to grow
Tamworth’s strategic location along one of Australia’s most vital economic corridors (between Sydney and Brisbane and in close proximity to several major ports) is a key advantage.
Now, improving transport connectivity (especially the fast-growing Tamworth Regional Airport and the new rail intermodal facility at Tamworth Global Gateway Park), has paved the way to realise the full potential of this unique advantage. The other regional opportunities include the New England Renewable Energy Zone and the Namoi Regional Job Precinct.
In 12 of the past 15 years (2008 to 2022) the population growth of Tamworth (ABS data) exceeded that of Regional NSW. Tamworth region’s average population growth during this period was 11% higher than that of Regional NSW.
Nearly two thirds (61%) of Tamworth’s local workers are in their prime working age of between 25 to 54 years (ABS 2021).
As a result of its well-diversified nature (between manufacturing and services – with agriculture, food processing and healthcare among the major industries) Tamworth’s economy is naturally resilient.
High in liveability
Tamworth scores high in affordability – considering both house and rental prices – compared with many peers in Regional NSW including Orange, Dubbo and Wagga Wagga.
The Tamworth hospital is the largest healthcare facility in NSW outside the Sydney-Wollongong-Newcastle metropolis. New education projects include the planned University of New England (UNE) campus in Tamworth.
Several major housing projects are in the works (e.g. Arcadia and Stratheden Housing Precincts), while Tamworth’s Councillors approved its first eight-storey apartment complex in December 2023.
Tamworth has a vibrant visitor economy and a comprehensive offering for arts – including The Tamworth Regional Gallery, Visitor Information Centre, Country Music Hall of Fame / Wax Museum and the Capitol Theatre. Tamworth is also the location of the 10-day annual Tamworth Country Music Festival held in January which attracts around 30,000 people per day.
Tamworth also boasts of international level athletics track and field facility, a seven court indoor sporting venue, and premier turf fields and pitches. Tamworth’s Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) is a global-scale facility.
Major Projects
It has been identified as one of the most exciting enterprise park and logistics hub developments in regional Australia – a massive 246 hectare green field site adjacent to an integrated heavy vehicle road network, one of Australia’s busiest regional airports with international freight potential, and a modern, purpose-built rail freight intermodal facility. Development infrastructure of the site is already underway, offering a unique opportunity for investors looking to save time and money.
A purpose-built Intermodal Rail Freight Facility operated by Qube Holdings was opened recently. Providing direct links to the Port of Newcastle and Port Botany with indirect links to the multi-billion-dollar Inland Rail, this will create new trade opportunities for inland regional businesses regional.
Tamworth Aviation Precinct
Located adjacent to the Tamworth Global Gateway Park (TGGP), the Tamworth Regional Airport represents a community asset ripe for further utilisation by interested investors.
With recent upgrades to key infrastructure, Tamworth Regional Airport offers new or expanding businesses significant international freight potential, with enhanced capabilities to cater towards both larger and greater numbers of aircraft on a daily basis.
The growing airport also offers regular services to other regional hubs and major cities, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
